Member Of The Month

The January Member of the Month has lapped thousands of miles in the Old Town Hot Springs lap pool. Blake Worsley started swimming at the pool 11 years ago, at ten years old, when his family moved to Steamboat from Canada, and they became Lifetime members. Blake swam for Steamboat’s Team Lightning, with his mom as coach. Mom soon realized that Blake had great swimming potential. As his times started dropping, the colleges started calling. Blake went to the University of Denver on a swimming scholarship and was chosen as the Sunbelt Conference Athlete of the year his junior and senior years. He says it started in Steamboat. "The Old Town Hot Springs gave me the grounds to be a professional athlete in the sport I love and I couldn’t be more grateful for the pool."

Worsley is now living in Victoria, Canada, and training with other Olympians, in an attempt to make the Canadian Olympic swim team. Just recently, he beat Olympic swimming superstar Michael Phelps in Berlin, in 200 free. "It was pretty exciting. He wasn’t on top of his game but it was still pretty fun to beat him." He’ll continue to visit his parents in Steamboat and swim at the hot springs lap pool. "It’s always fun to get back to my roots." Best of luck to Blake Worsley and his stellar swimming career.

Dreamboat Café Is Open

The Dreamboat Café is open and ready, with a new and improved menu. New owners Annette Seiler and Bill Stewart have spent several months remodeling the restaurant as well as working on the menu. Stewart says, "We improved on what was already here, and it was all based on customer feedback." New menu items include the Killer Veggie sandwich (Tofu or sliced hard-boiled egg, roasted red pepper, blue cheese crumbles, red onion, chipotle mayo, on a warm ciabatta roll), Lettuce-less Salad, the Heart Springs Salad, and Fruit Parfaits (made to order). There are several new smoothies including the Mango Sunset, and the Red, White, and Blueberry. For the complete menu, CLICK HERE.

Seiler says she is thrilled to be able to serve the members and the visitors of the Old Town Hot Springs. "We worked really hard and put a lot of thought and research into the menu in order to make it the new place to be in town. I would love to see this as a place where people come and meet friends for coffee and lunch while their kids go swimming."

The current hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The restaurant will be open earlier in the summers for coffee and continental breakfast. "We feel we need to get a good grip on the ins and outs of the business, being new café owners," said Seiler.

Between The Lanes

Take advantage of the wonderful hot pools at the Old Town Hot Springs by giving yourself a vertical kicking workout this winter. Vertical kicking sets are a terrific way to build leg strength and get your heart rate up.  An added advantage of these drills is they can be done in the warm pool deep end and they help you to maintain that all-important feel for the water over the winter months. An added bonus is that the morning hours are best, and very quiet.

  • 5x1 minute freestyle kicking; hands raised above head
  • 30 seconds rest between each minute, treading water
  • 5x1 minute dolphin kicking; hands crossed over chest
  • 15 seconds rest between each minute, treading water
  • One minute vertical breaststroke or eggbeater kick
  • Repeat the set for a 30-minute blast of a workout
