Underpass Construction Is Underway
Construction crews are busy on the lower section of Fish Creek Falls Road, building a much-needed underpass. This underpass will connect Spring Creek Trail from the high school to the upper parking lot and around to connect with the bridge to the Post Office. The OTHS is happy to partner with the City on this much needed improvement to the community as well as to our facility. This project is very important for the safety of all the children and adults who cross Fish Creek Falls Road to get to the tennis courts, to get to the OTHS property, and to Lincoln Avenue and downtown. The underpass also allows OTHS the option in the future of using the tennis court property for parking should that be required for any future expansions.
The tennis court next to the creek is being removed to create a berm, which complies with FEMA requirements for flood plain work. Two tennis courts will remain for our members and guests. The construction crew is also staging their equipment on the back row of the upper parking lot. The Blimpies parking lot is available for overflow parking, as the City has leased that lot for that purpose.
The City is expected to close Fish Creek Falls Tuesday, Sept. 7, through Friday, Sept. 17. The underpass project is expected to be completed by the end of October.

Dance Your Workout With Zumba
Zumba classes are all the rage across the nation and now at the Old Town Hot Springs. Heidi Meshurel-Jolly has added Zumba instructing to her 30 years of dancing experience, including nine at Disneyworld. Heidi became a licensed Zumba instructor in Denver, and took her Zumba Gold instruction classes in Rochester, NY. She says the fun about Zumba and the Latin-based dancing is that you forget you’re working out, hence the Zumba theme, “Ditch the workout. Join the party.” Heidi adds that flat soled shoes are best. “The less tread, the better.”
Heidi teaches Zumba classes Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., Mondays at 5:30 p.m., and Thursdays, at 8:30 a.m. (The Monday class used to be on Tuesdays. It starts Sept. 13 due to the Labor Day holiday.) Jody Glaisher is also a certified Zumba instructor and teaches the Zumba Toning class at 12:15 on Tuesdays. Zumba classes are free to members.
Friday Fun
Stop by the facility on Friday mornings and see what is in store. A variety of classes will be offered during the 8:30 a.m. class on Fridays, whether it is Zumba Toning (Sept. 10), Total Fitness (Sept. 17), Turbo Kick (Sept. 24), or Bosu Cardio (Oct. 1). This class is free to members.
Jazzercise Comes Back

Flip Out!
Flip out at the Old Town Hot Springs with B & K’s Flip & Dive Class. Brian and Kevin Fitch are 20-year-old twins, who lifeguard at the pool, and teach snowboarding on the mountain. They moved here from Pennsylvania where they were competitive divers in high school. They want to share the fun by teaching the basics of diving and flipping off a one-meter board. The class is good for all kids who can pass the yellow band swim test, which is swimming freestyle for one length of the pool. The dive class is 4:15-5:15 p.m., on Thursdays, Sept. 9-30. The cost for the month is $32/members and $48/non-members.
Swim The Distance
When was the last time you walked or ran 200 miles? John Ward went one step further and SWAM 200 miles in the lap pool at the Old Town Hot Springs. He’s the winner of the Stroke the Distance contest held this summer. It started June 1 and ran through the end of August. Participants kept track of how many laps or miles they swam and Steamboat’s John Ward was the big winner, swimming over 225 miles. Audrey Earley is from Houston where she swims Masters. She lives in Steamboat during the summer. She logged over 50 miles, and was the winner for the women.
Ward is training for an even bigger challenge on Sept. 18. He’ll compete in the Alcatraz Invitational Swim, which is a 1.25 mile open water swim from Alcatraz Island back to the South End Rowing Clubhouse at the foot of the Hyde St. Pier in San Francisco. Ward says he has never done anything like this before and he’s doing it just for the fun of it. “It isn’t far. It’s the current and the sharks that make it more of a challenge.”
The next day, Ward is signed up for the 5th Annual Roper Invitational Golden Gate Swim. It’s a 1.5 mile swim in 60 degree water. “I’ve swum in the ocean but I’ve never done any open water type stuff. I just turned 50 and I’ve got to start doing some things. I’m not going to just stand on the corner and let it just go by.” Good luck to John.

Laps For Lindsay
A former member of the Steamboat community is in need of our support. Lindsay Labaree Bathke grew up in Steamboat, and swam for Team Lightning. Her mom, Jean Labaree, was the Group Exercise Director for the Old town Hot Springs. Lindsay is 31 and recently suffered a debilitating growth in her brain. She was taken to Swedish Medical Hospital in Englewood, and has recently been transferred to the Rehabilitation Hospital in Farmington, NM.
Lindsay was a Nordic skier with SSWSC, and played high school soccer. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Youth Group. She graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1998, before attending the University of Wyoming. Lindsay lives in Durango, where she is the Aquatics Director at Durango Parks & Rec. She and her husband, Dutch, have two small boys. Jackson is three and Blair is almost a year old.
The Old Town Hot Springs will host a fundraising event called “Laps for Lindsay.” The date is Sunday, Sept. 19. The fun starts at noon. Events include swimming laps for pledges, followed by water polo and volleyball games as well as a dive contest for all ages. Laps for Lindsay will be divided into three different timed lengths of a half hour, hour, and hour and a half so everyone can participate. For water polo and volleyball, you can sign up as a team or as an individual, with $5-10 donations suggested per player. Bring some spare change to participate in the soak-a-thon. Every time you switch spa pools you can make a donation in a jar. Kids will have games in the shallow crab pool, so bring your pennies.
