April Newsletter/Old Town Hot Springs
Bring Your Dog To The Pool
The 1st Annual Poochy Paddle is this Sunday, April 12, and it promises to be a perfectly crazy canine adventure. All daring dogs are invited to take a dip in the Old Town Hot Springs lap pool Sunday afternoon, the day before it is closed for cleaning.
Two sessions are available for the tail-wagging adventure. The sessions are from 2:00-4:00 and 4:00-6:00 on Sunday afternoon. Please enter with your leashed dogs at the back gate by the lap pool.
The cost is $5 per dog along with a donation to the Steamboat Animal Shelter. Right now, the Animal Shelter needs non-clump kitty litter, wet dog food, wet kitten food, dry kitten food and dry kitten milk formula.
Your dog must be under voice control at all times. Owners are responsible for picking up after their dog. Also, don’t plan on swimming with your pet as it would be an obvious violation of health codes. However, tennis balls and Frisbees are welcomed.
There will be an Owner/Pet Look Alike Contest. Prizes will be donated by Paws 'n Claws 'n Things. Beware of a very powerful wet dog smell in Steamboat after this event!
Lap Pool Closed In Mid-April
The lap pool will be closed for cleaning after the Poochy Paddle on Sunday evening, April 12. Power washing and muriatic acid are used to clean any stains caused by the natural mineral waters. It takes 26 hours to refill the lap pool with the hot water straight from the hot spring. The lap pool is expected to reopen by Sunday, April 19, in pristine condition with sparkling clear water.
Lifetime Member Meeting
The annual Lifetime Member meeting is Monday night, April 13, at 7:00 p.m. Please join us as we update you on everything happening at the Old Town Hot Springs, including membership prices, annual budget, capital improvements and new board members. We look forward to hearing your ideas and comments.
Meet A Member
Sandra Carver isn’t the best swimmer yet but she’s learning and getting better every day. Sandra Carver, is our Member of the Month. She visited the Old Town Hot Springs at Thanksgiving, and decided to give it a try for a month. She loved the water aerobics classes, and started toning up and dropping some pounds, so she joined for a year.
Since she didn’t know how to swim, Sandra signed up for swimming lessons with Sara Barry. She didn’t want to be a passive observer on a vacation with her grandkids to the country’s biggest water park at Wisconsin Dells. “I would rather participate than watch. It will make my grandkids proud that I can swim now!”
Sandra adds that she has made many new friends in the water aerobics class. “A lot of them are willing to coach me now, and help me get better at swimming.”
Sandra has also taken a tour of the Fitness Center to learn how to use the machines. She wants to expand on her physical therapy to help a shoulder injury. She was hurt on the job at City Market, where she is the Photo Lab Manager.
This 61-year-old mother of three and grandmother of eight has more in store. She says she’s been rock climbing and repelling, hiking and whitewater rafting. Now that she has learned to swim, “I still want to go skydiving, just once, to say I did it!”

Lap Lane Schedule
The lap lane schedule is changing this summer, in order to better accommodate our members as well as the members of Steamboat Springs Team Lightning (SSST). The administrative staff at the Old Town Hot Springs is condensing the hours that SSST will be using the lap lanes, particularly when the kids get out of school this summer.
SSST has 125 member swimmers, and all SSST families are required to be members of the Old Town Hot Springs. We recognize the challenge of providing for the youth of our community while providing adequate time for our working adult members, which is why we are trying the new schedule.
Starting in May, the new schedule is as follows:
• May 4-June 6, 3:45-5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday - Six lanes occupied by SSST; two lanes occupied for OTHS swim lessons; no lanes open for adult lap swim. Shallow pool and deep end not available. 5:00-6:30 p.m., - Four lanes occupied by SSST; four lanes open for adult lap swim. Shallow pool and deep end not available. All lanes open for lap swimmers in the morning before work, during the lunch hours and after 6:30 p.m.
• May 4-June 6, 8:45-11:00 a.m., Saturday - Five lanes occupied by SSST; three lanes open for adult lap swim Shallow pool and deep end not available. All lanes open for adult lap swim in the morning before 8:45 a.m., during the lunch hours and in the evening.
• June 8-July 31, 7:30-10:00 a.m., Monday-Friday - Eight lanes occupied by SSST; no lanes open for adult lap swim. Shallow pool and deep end not available. All lanes open for adult lap swim from 5:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m., with at least three lanes available after 10 a.m. for the rest of the day.
Boot Camp Is Back
The outdoor Boot Camp Aerobics class starts up again on May 5. The Tuesday/Thursday class runs through July 11. Class time is 5:30-6:45 p.m. Cost is $120. Instructor is Sue Lowrie.
Behind The Scenes
Four long-time board members are retiring from the Old Town Hot Springs this month. We’d like to thank them for their years of service and expertise in supporting this centerpiece to our community.
Bud Romberg celebrates 40 years on the board of the Old Town Hot Springs. Bud served in the U.S. Army, worked for Boeing Airplanes, and eventually was a science teacher at Steamboat Springs High School. He hopes the OTHS, “Continues to grow and prosper and continues to provide for the aquatic and fitness needs of this community.”
Mike Holloran joined the board in 1977, although he says “It seems like I have served on the OTHS Board for most of my adult life, growing old with the maturation of the facility.” Mike is an attorney and rancher. Now that he is not on the board, he says he will, “Continue to practice law, raise hay, love my wife and children, travel and workout at the OTHS.”
Holloran says his wish for the future is, “For the OTHS’s Board and staff to generate a feeling in the Steamboat community that the OTHS is an historic community treasure to be supported and valued, and for the creation of a recreation and exercise campus on the current site of the OTHS, combining, if possible, the old post office site.”
Linda Cantway has been on the board of the Old Town Hot Springs for 25 years. She’s a respiratory therapist and mom of four, who used to help work on water activities for all of the kids. She looks forward to the Old Town Hot Springs continuing to be the best center for healthful family-oriented activities.
George Tolles became a board member in 1984. He is a former CMC college professor and Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. He helped develop and preserve the thermal springs which feed the various pools. He swims every morning at 5:30.
Tolles says he hopes the Old Town Hot Springs can be recognized and honored in a Centennial Celebration (1909-2009) of the arrival of the Denver-Rio Grande Railroad in Steamboat. Tolles says, “Many of the original large bath house photos stem from that period. When the train came to Steamboat Springs in 1909, the pool was one of the major attractions for arriving visitors-- an attraction which continues to this day.”
New Child Care Manager
Welcome to Stephanie Orozco, the new Child Care Manager at the Old Town Hot Springs. Stephanie is a Lifetime Member, and long-time worker in the child care center. She replaces Jeannie Jo Logan who has run the child care for five years. Best of luck to Jeannie Jo, who is off to work with Steamboat Veterinary Hospital.
